As part of this horror production, I had the opportunity to collaborate with the workshops at Theater Krefeld to design and build the carnivorous plant Audrey II in its four stages.
"Mr Mushnik’s flower shop is doing terribly. When he tells his employees, Seymour and Audrey, that he’s having to close down, Seymour shows him an exotic plant that he’s been secretly tending for weeks. A carnivorous plant that can’t be found in any identification guide. And no sooner is it in the shop window than curious customers start turning up. Business is booming. But only Seymour knows the plant’s dark secret. It doesn’t eat flies or mice; it craves blood. Human blood. What Seymour doesn’t realise is just how insatiable the plant is."
*The Little Shop of Horrors* is a thrilling musical brimming with black humour. It is based on Roger Corman’s 1960 B-movie, *The Little Shop of Horrors* (starring Jack Nicholson, amongst others), which caused a sensation as a quirky horror-comedy. The musical by Ashman and Menken premiered Off-Broadway in New York in 1982 and became a hit. And Frank Oz’s 1986 film, based on the musical, became a cult cinema favourite worldwide.
