Siri und die Eismeerpiraten - Siri and the Arctic Pirates
In this production, I had the opportunity to coach Sonia Glade in puppetry and acted as a consultant on the construction of the ‘Waalhuhn’ puppet.
Siri and the Arctic Sea Pirates at Heilbronn Theatre
by Frida Nilsson
German translation by Friederike Buchinger | Stage adaptation by Karin Drechsel
Siri lives with her elderly father and her younger sister Miki on an island in the Arctic Ocean. Life is hard; they fish and gather berries to keep themselves fed. One day, Siri leaves her little sister alone whilst she goes berry-picking and can only watch from a distance as the crew of the dangerous pirate Weißhaupt kidnaps little Miki. Everyone fears Weißhaupt, the most dangerous man in the Arctic Ocean. Everyone knows that he makes small children toil for him in the mine so that he can become ever richer. No one dares to stand in his way. Siri feels guilty about her sister’s abduction. So she sets off all on her own to rescue Miki. She signs on to the ‘Sturmvogel’. The ship’s cook, Frederik, becomes her friend, but the captain has no good intentions towards her and throws her overboard. Yet Siri does not give up. Undeterred, she continues her search. She meets an ice wolf hunter and a boy named Einar, whose mother is the strongest woman on the Arctic Islands, as well as some shady sailors. With courage, perseverance and practical wits, she finally finds the pirate’s hideout. Will she succeed in putting an end to his schemes?
In *Siri and the Arctic Pirates*, the multi-award-winning Swedish author Frida Nilsson tells a breathtakingly exciting adventure story about friendship and courage. In a way that is accessible to children, she also explores, almost in passing, existential questions such as: Is it right to exploit animals and people for one’s own ends? How does one face one’s fears? And doesn’t everything we do leave its mark?
